How to Identify a True Prophet: Test the Spirit

In my last two blog posts, I shared about the Holy Spirit and His ministry. In this post, I want to explore the importance of discerning spirits and recognising false prophets.

We live in a world filled with voices claiming to speak on behalf of God. Some may sound convincing, spiritual, and even biblical. So, how do we know whether someone is genuinely speaking the truth of God?

The Bible gives us a clear instruction:

“Do not quench the Spirit. Do not treat prophecies with contempt but test them all; hold on to what is good, reject every kind of evil.”

    1 Thessalonians 5:19–22 [NIV]

We are not called to blindly accept every prophecy or spiritual message. Neither are we called to reject prophecy altogether. Instead, Scripture tells us to test everything and hold on to what is good.

As Christians, our lives should be patterned after Christ. Jesus lived on earth as the Son of Man and set an example for us to follow. The presence and work of the Holy Spirit are not demonstrated only through miracles, signs, or spiritual gifts. They are also revealed through the practical outworking of our salvation—particularly as we are transformed into the likeness of Christ.

There are three essential commands that demonstrate a life abiding in Christ:

·         Believe in Jesus Christ.

·         Love our brothers and sisters.

·         Live morally upright lives.

Our conduct matters. The way we live can reveal whether the work of the Holy Spirit is genuinely taking place within us.

So, how do we test the spirit behind a message or the person claiming to speak by the Spirit?

Keypoint 1. Do They Teach the Truth About Jesus?

John gives us the first and most important test:

“Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. This is how you can recognise the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God.”

 1 John 4:1–3 [NIV]

According to John, the primary test is what a person believes and teaches about Jesus Christ. Do they acknowledge Jesus Christ as He truly is—fully God and fully man?

The divine and human nature of Jesus Christ is central to the Christian faith. To deny His divinity or His humanity is to distort the identity and work of Christ, our Saviour.

Therefore, whenever someone claims to speak by the Spirit of God, we must first examine what they teach about Jesus.

·         Does their message exalt Christ?

·         Does it point people to Jesus?

·         Does it agree with the truth revealed in Scripture?

A genuine work of the Holy Spirit will always glorify Jesus Christ rather than elevate the messenger above Him.

Keypoint 2. Examine Their Lifestyle

The second test is their life.

John writes:

“And this is His commandment: that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, as He gave us commandment. Now he who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. And by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.”

 1 John 3:23–24 [NKJV]

The Spirit of truth transforms us into the likeness of Christ.

There is a spirit of truth, but there is also a spirit of error. Where the Spirit of God is at work, we should increasingly see the character of Christ—love, humility, obedience, holiness, compassion, and a genuine concern for others.

On the other hand, we should be cautious when someone's ministry is consistently driven by greed, self-glory, pride, competition, manipulation, or the desire for power and recognition.

·         What motivates the person?

·         Do they genuinely love people?

·         Do they value others as people created in God's image?

·         Do they point people towards Christ, or towards themselves?

A person's spiritual gifts should never be used as a substitute for godly character. At the same time, we must remember that every believer is still subject to sin in this fallen world. We should therefore be careful not to demand perfection from others. We are called to show mercy and grace, just as God has shown mercy and grace to us.

The issue is not whether someone has ever made a mistake. The issue is the consistent direction and fruit of their life.

Keypoint 3. Examine the Fruit of Their Ministry

Jesus gave us another important test:

“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits.”

Matthew 7:15–16 [NKJV]

Jesus goes on to explain that a good tree produces good fruit, while a bad tree produces bad fruit.

“Therefore, by their fruits you will know them.”

Matthew 7:20 [NKJV]

Jesus warns us that false prophets may not always look dangerous. They may appear spiritual. They may use religious language. They may speak confidently about God.

But Jesus tells us to look at the fruit.

False prophets can tell people what they want to hear while claiming that their message came from God. Their ministries may be motivated by money, fame, influence, recognition, or power.

Therefore, we need to look beyond the platform.

·         Look beyond the charisma.

·         Look beyond the impressive preaching.

·         Look beyond the signs and wonders.

·         Look at the fruit.

What kind of people is the ministry producing?

Does it produce humility or pride?

Love or division?

Holiness or compromise?

Freedom or manipulation?

Christ-centred disciples or followers devoted to a particular personality?

Just as a tree consistently produces fruit according to its nature, a person's life and ministry will eventually reveal what is truly taking place within. Good teachers should consistently demonstrate godly behaviour and moral character while seeking to live out the truth they teach.

A Personal Testimony:

Let me share a personal experience.

There was a time in my life when my family had to move to another suburb. Our church leaders recommended a church for us to attend. We went as a family, and initially, we enjoyed the service. The sermon was motivating; the worship was powerful. Everything appeared to be good. We thought, This could be a good church for our family.

However, when we returned home after the service, the Holy Spirit brought a particular Scripture to my attention:

“...but a bad tree bears bad fruit.”

Immediately, I sensed in my spirit that this was not the church we were meant to become part of. That experience reminded me of the importance of knowing the Word of God and learning to listen to the Holy Spirit.

We cannot depend solely on what we see with our natural eyes.

We cannot depend solely on how inspiring a sermon sounds or how powerful a worship service feels.

We need to be grounded in Scripture and sensitive to the Holy Spirit.

My child, get into the Word of God. Fill your heart and mind with Scripture. The more familiar you become with God's Word, the more readily you will recognise what agrees with His truth and what does not.

Pursue the Holy Spirit, But Test Everything

This is not intended to be a comprehensive list of all the ways we can test the spirits. Rather, these are principles we can practise while asking the Holy Spirit to give us wisdom and discernment.

Paul writes:

“Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.”

1 Corinthians 14:1 [NKJV]

Notice the order: pursue love. Spiritual gifts should never be separated from love. Prophecy, teaching, preaching, and every other spiritual gift must operate within the character and purposes of God.

Paul also gives a serious instruction:

“If anyone thinks himself to be a prophet or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things which I write to you are the commandments of the Lord.”

1 Corinthians 14:37 [NKJV]

A genuine prophet does not place personal revelation above Scripture. Any prophetic word must be tested against the Word of God. The Holy Spirit will never contradict what He has already revealed through Scripture.

Be Alert to Deception

The Bible also warns us that deception will increase:

“The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron.”

 1 Timothy 4:1–2 [NIV]

This is why discernment is so important.

We should not become suspicious of everything spiritual, but neither should we accept everything without testing it.

The answer is not fear.

The answer is maturity.

The answer is to know God's Word, walk closely with Jesus, pursue holiness, and learn to recognise the voice of the Holy Spirit.

Final Thoughts

If you genuinely want to see the Holy Spirit moving in your life, develop a deep thirst for the Word of God. The Holy Spirit will illuminate Scripture and teach you truths that go beyond what a preacher can communicate from a platform. Your heart will increasingly be drawn towards prayer and deeper communion with Jesus.

As the Holy Spirit works within you, your prayers can begin to change. You may find yourself praying less about yourself and more for others—for your family, your community, the Church, the nations, and for revival.

The Holy Spirit produces in us a heart that desires what God desires. My child, depend on the Holy Spirit. Trust that gentle, still voice that draws you closer to Jesus and His Word.

And never allow someone's spiritual gift, position, popularity, or apparent anointing to replace the truth of God's Word. Discernment is not about judging people harshly. It is about protecting our hearts, remaining faithful to Christ, and ensuring that we are not led astray by deception.

Test the spirits so that you may hold on to what is good and reject what is evil.

Let’s Pray:

Dear Lord, give us wisdom, knowledge, and discernment so that we will not fall into the trap of deceiving spirits. Teach us to test the spirits according to Your Word. Give us grace to recognise what is true, courage to reject what is false, and humility to continually examine our own hearts.

Help us to know Your Word, walk closely with Jesus, and become increasingly sensitive to the voice of the Holy Spirit. May our lives produce good fruit that brings glory to You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
