How to Make Your Prayers More Effective
Updated: Sep 4

“Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.”
James 5:16 [NKJV]
Anyone can pray. Prayer is an invitation available to every believer to communicate with God. However, Scripture teaches us that there is a difference between simply praying and praying effectively.
Effective prayer begins with understanding who we are in Christ, our relationship with God, and the authority we have been given through Jesus. When we understand our identity in Christ, prayer is no longer merely a list of requests—it becomes a confident, faith-filled conversation with our Heavenly Father.
James 5:16 gives us several important principles for effective prayer. Let us look at three of them.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Key Point 1: Confess Your Sins to God
One of the foundations of effective prayer is repentance.
We cannot approach God casually while deliberately holding on to sin. We must come before Him with a humble and repentant heart, confessing our sins and turning away from our sinful ways.
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
1 John 1:9 [NIV]
To repent means more than simply feeling sorry for what we have done. Repentance means turning away from sin and turning toward God. It is a change of heart, direction, and ultimately, lifestyle.
For those who have not yet received Christ, this begins with being born again, putting our faith in Jesus and receiving Him as Lord and Saviour. For the believer, repentance remains an important part of our walk with God. We continually allow the Holy Spirit to search our hearts and transform us to become more like Christ.
As Christians, we should strive to produce the fruit of the Spirit in our lives, walking in love toward God and toward others.
Our relationship with God is not based on pretending to be perfect. It is based on being honest before Him, acknowledging our need for His grace, and allowing Him to transform us.
When we confess our sins, we are not informing God of something He does not already know. Rather, we are agreeing with Him about our sin and surrendering it to Him. A heart that is surrendered to God creates the right foundation for prayer.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Key Point 2: Understand What It Means to Be Righteous
James tells us that “the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.”
But who is a righteous person?
If you are a born-again Christian, your righteousness does not come from your own goodness, achievements, or perfect behaviour. We are made righteous through Jesus Christ.
Isaiah reminds us of our condition apart from God:
All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away.
Isaiah 64:6 [NIV]
Without Christ, even our best efforts cannot make us righteous before a holy God. Human goodness is not enough. However, the good news of the Gospel is that Jesus did for us what we could never do for ourselves.
This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.
Romans 3:22–24 [NIV]
Righteousness, therefore, is not something we earn. It is a gift we receive through faith in Jesus Christ.
Righteousness Is Right Standing with God
Righteousness also speaks of having right standing with God.
Jesus fulfilled the law perfectly and accomplished what humanity could not accomplish. Through His sacrifice, He restored our relationship with God and opened the way for us to approach God's throne with confidence—not because of our own merit, but because of His grace.
Scripture says:
For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
2 Corinthians 5:21 [NKJV]
Our righteousness is therefore found in Christ.
This is the foundation of a believer's confidence in prayer. We do not pray because we believe we are good enough to deserve God's attention. We pray because Jesus has made a way for us to come to the Father.
When you know who you are in Christ, you can approach God not as a stranger, but as His child.
But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him.
1 Corinthians 6:17 [NKJV]
Knowing your identity in Christ changes the way you pray. You begin to pray from a place of relationship rather than fear, and from faith rather than insecurity.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Key Point 3: Pray Fervently
James does not simply speak about the prayer of a righteous person. He speaks about the “effectual fervent prayer.”
Fervent prayer is earnest, sincere, passionate, and persistent. It comes from a heart that genuinely believes God and desires His will.
Fervency in prayer grows when we understand who God is and who we are in Christ.
When we know that God is good, that He loves us, and that He is for us, we can come before Him with confidence.
But you, Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness.
Psalms 86: 15 [NIV]
We can bring our needs, desires, concerns, and dreams to Him, trusting that He hears us. However, this does not mean that God will give us everything we ask for exactly as we ask for it. Rather, genuine faith trusts God's character and His wisdom, even when His answer is different from what we expected.

Fervency in prayer grows when we pray the Word of God
Another powerful way to develop fervency in prayer is to pray according to God's Word.
When we pray Scripture, we align our prayers with what God has already revealed about His character, promises, and will.
God's Word carries His authority:
So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.
Isaiah 55:11 [NKJV]
When we fill our prayers with Scripture, they become anchored in God's truth rather than driven solely by our emotions or circumstances.
For example, when you are afraid, you can pray God's promises about His presence. When you are anxious, you can pray His Word concerning peace. When you need wisdom, you can pray according to His promise to give wisdom generously.
The more we know God's Word, the more effectively we can use it to shape our prayers.

The Foundation of Effective Prayer
Effective prayer is not about finding a special formula or using the right words. It begins with a relationship.
These three foundational truths help us to pray effectively:
· Confess and repent of sin. Come before God with a humble and surrendered heart.
· Understand your righteousness in Christ. Your righteousness does not come from your own goodness but from Jesus and His finished work.
· Pray fervently and according to God's Word. Approach God with faith, sincerity, persistence, and confidence in His promises.
When we understand these truths, prayer becomes more than a religious activity. It becomes a powerful expression of our relationship with God.
We come to Him because He has made a way.
We pray because He hears us.
We pray with confidence because our righteousness is found in Christ.
And we pray fervently because we know that God is faithful, His Word is true, and He is able to accomplish far more than we can ask or imagine.
As James reminds us, “The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.” Let us therefore become people who do not merely pray, but who pray with understanding, faith, persistence, and confidence in God.
May the good Lord develop us to become prayer warriors, not just praying for ourselves but for others and nations.

Let's Pray:
Dear Lord, thank you that the effectual fervent prayers of the righteous availeth much. May we always remember the truth and pray in alignment with the scriptures that impact the spiritual realm. Help us grow and give us the boldness to stand in the gap for others and to pray diligently, putting our confidence in you alone. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
If you agree with this prayer, type "Amen" in the comments.
God bless you all.
