The Lord's Prayer: A Template for Every Believer

Have you ever asked your parents or teachers to show you how to do something? It is natural to learn from those who have more experience than we do. Similarly, the disciples asked Jesus to teach them how to pray. We read this in Luke 11.

Today, let's unpack the prayer template Jesus gave His disciples—a model that we can imitate and practice in our daily lives. The Word of God is timeless, living, and relevant in every season. Let's dive into the Scriptures.

The Lord's Prayer (Matthew 6:9–13)

Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Our Father in Heaven

In verse 9, Jesus teaches His disciples to address God as "Our Father." He is not merely our earthly father but our loving heavenly Father, who cares for us so deeply that He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to die for our sins so that we could be reconciled to Him.

When we call God "Father," we acknowledge a personal relationship with Him. He is loving, dependable, compassionate, and faithful.

Romans 8:14–16 says: "For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God... By Him we cry, 'Abba, Father.' The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children."

Through Christ, we have been adopted into God's family. Although He is the Almighty Creator who rules over heaven and earth, we have the privilege of approaching Him as beloved sons and daughters.

The prayer continues: "Hallowed be Thy name."

As we come before God, we come with hearts full of worship. His name is holy. He alone is perfect, pure, and worthy of all honour. Although He lovingly calls us His children, we must never lose our reverence for His majesty, holiness, and sovereignty.

Thy Kingdom Come, Thy Will Be Done

Jesus teaches us to pray: "Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven."

When we pray this, we are asking for God's reign and rule to be established in our hearts, our families, our communities, and throughout the world.

Jesus taught that the Kingdom of God is already at work among His people. According to Luke 17:21, “…The Kingdom of God is within you.”  Yet Scripture also points us toward the future, when God's Kingdom will be fully revealed in the new heaven and the new earth (Revelation 21:1).

What about God's will?

Psalm 24:1–2 declares: "The earth is the LORD'S, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it; for He founded it upon the seas and established it upon the waters."

Because God is our Creator, we can confidently pray that His perfect will be accomplished on earth just as it is in heaven. God often accomplishes His purposes through people who are willing to obey Him.

You can also personalise this part of the prayer by asking God to establish His will in your own life. Ask Him to guide your steps, shape your decisions, and help you fulfil the purpose He has prepared for you.

Why Should We Stay in God's Will?

Psalm 127:1 reminds us: "Unless the LORD builds the house, the builders labour in vain."

My child, lasting success is impossible apart from God's hand upon our lives. Since we are citizens of His Kingdom, we want Him to build us, strengthen us, and direct our paths.

When we remain in God's will, He helps us carry life's burdens. He provides strength, wisdom, and grace for every challenge. However, when we insist on following our own way, we often carry burdens He never intended us to bear.

That is why remaining in God's will is always for our good. He equips us to accomplish everything He has called us to do.

Psalm 18:30 says: "As for God, His way is perfect... He is a shield to all who take refuge in Him."

Our God is our protector and refuge in every season.

Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread

Jesus then teaches us to pray for our daily needs. "Give us this day our daily bread."

God delights in providing for His children.

Philippians 4:19 says: "My God shall supply all your needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus."

God is our Provider and Sustainer. Although we work to earn a living, every opportunity, every blessing, and every breath comes by His grace. Without God's mercy, everything we rely on could disappear in a moment.

There are two beautiful ways to understand "daily bread."

First, it refers to our physical needs—food, shelter, health, and every necessity of life. God faithfully provides for us because He is Jehovah Jireh, our Provider.

Second, it reminds us of our spiritual nourishment.

Matthew 4:4 says: "Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds from the mouth of God."

Every day, we should ask God not only for physical provision but also for fresh spiritual food. We should live according to His Word and hear His voice.

Psalm 5:3 says: "In the morning, LORD, You hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before You and wait expectantly."

Spending time in God's presence each morning allows Him to strengthen, instruct, and guide us for the day ahead.

Forgive Us Our Debts, As We Forgive Our Debtors

Verse 12 teaches one of the greatest lessons of the Christian life: Forgiveness is not merely a virtue—it is a lifestyle.

To forgive others, we must first understand how much God has forgiven us. Every sin, every failure, every act of disobedience was paid for through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

The holy and sovereign God humbled Himself by becoming man. He endured rejection, mockery, suffering, and death to save us.

When we truly understand the depth of His love and sacrifice, our hearts become more willing to forgive those who have hurt us.

As we receive God's forgiveness, we are called to extend that same grace to others.

Lead Us Not into Temptation

Jesus concludes this section of the prayer by saying: "Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil."

We live in a world filled with temptation. The enemy seeks to draw us away through pride, fear, selfish desires, distractions, and countless other schemes.

But God is faithful.

1 Corinthians 10:13 assures us: "No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can endure it."

My child, whenever temptation comes, humble yourself before God and resist the temptation. The Lord will always provide a way of escape and give you the strength to endure.

That is one reason why beginning each day in prayer is so important. We do not know what challenges may come, but God does. Prayer prepares our hearts before the battle begins.

Ending with Praise

Finally, Jesus teaches us to end our prayer with praise: "For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen."

Everything belongs to God.

He is the Alpha and the Omega—the Beginning and the End. His power has no limits, and His glory will never fade. He alone deserves all honour, worship, and praise.

Let's Pray:

Dear Heavenly Father, Thank You for giving us a perfect pattern for prayer through Your Son, Jesus Christ. Help us not only to understand these words but to live them each day. Teach us to honour Your holy name, seek Your Kingdom, and desire Your will above our own. Thank You for providing our daily bread, both physically and spiritually. Forgive us as we forgive those who have wronged us. Strengthen us to resist temptation, deliver us from evil, and keep us close to You.

For Yours is the Kingdom, the power, and the glory forever.
